Computer Forensics Courses
URI Offers the following courses in Digital Forensics:
- HPR108B Intro to Computer Forensics. This course is typically offered in the fall and is designed for freshmen and those completely new to the field. This course is taught in person and is available to all undergraduate students in any major or minor program that have been accepted to the honors program. It assumes no background in computer science or digital forensics.
- COMI8035 Intro to Computer Forensics. This course is offered in the spring, summer and fall semesters at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). This course is taught online and is available to any student taking courses at CCRI. It assumes no background in computer science or digital forensics.
- CSC414 Computer System Fundamentals. This course is typically offered in the summer and is designed for students who are just entering the field. This course is available to undergraduate students enrolled in the minor or students enrolled in either of the certificate programs. Undergraduate students should plan on taking this course after having completed their sophomore or junior year. This course teaches the fundamentals of computer concepts and acts as a building block for which all of the other courses are based. This course is taught online and is a requirement for all degree and certificate programs.
- CSC491 Study in Computer Science - Digital Forensics Practicum. This is an independent study course arranged with Dr. Fay-Wolfe, typically in a student's sophomore year, where the student works at The Rhode Island Digital Forensics Center on cases and projects there.
- CSC485 Computer Forensics. This course is offered in the fall and is available to undergraduate students enrolled in the minor or students enrolled in the Professional Certificate Program. This course is typically taken by undergraduate students in the fall of a student's junior or senior year. It is taught by Adjunct Prof. Dickerman and requires CSC414 as a pre-requisite. This course is taught online and is a requirement for the Undergraduate Minor as well as the Professional Certificate.
- CSC486 Network Forensics. This course is offered in the spring and is available to undergraduate students enrolled in the minor or students enrolled in the Professional Certificate Program. This course is typically taken by undergraduate students in the fall of a student's junior or senior year. It is taught by Adjunct Prof. Dickerman and requires CSC485 as a pre-requisite. This course is taught online and is a requirement for the Undergraduate Minor as well as the Professional Certificate.
- CSC499 Internship. This course is an internship with a practicing digital forensics organization. It is supervised by both Dr. Fay-Wolfe and a mentor at the practicing organization. It is often taken by undergraduate students in the Spring or Summer after having taken CSC485 (pre-requisite) in the Fall. This course is a requirement for the Undergraduate Minor.
- CSC585 Topics in Computer Forensics. This course is offered in the Fall and is team-taught by Adjunct Prof. Dickerman and Dr. Fay-Wolfe. It covers the same material as CSC485 (basic computer forensics), but also explores new issues in computer forensics. This course is taught online and is a requirement for The Graduate Certificate Program. Its pre-requisite is CSC414.
- CSC586 Topics in Network Forensics. This course is offered in the Spring and is team-taught by Adjunct Prof. Dickerman and Dr. Fay-Wolfe. It covers the same material as CSC486 (basic network forensics), but also explores new issues in network forensics. This course is taught online and is a requirement for The Graduate Certificate Program. Its pre-requisite is CSC485 or CSC585.
- CSC590 Digital Forensics Research/Practicum. This course can be a research project done under the supervision of a faculty member either on campus or online. Alternatively, URI offers on-site "boot camps" where students come to Rhode Island for 3-4 days for intense digital forensics training and research topic exploration. The pre-requisite is CSC486 or CSC586. This course is a requirement for the Professional and Graduate Certificate Programs.
- CSC599/699 Digital Forensics Research. This is a Master's thesis or Doctoral dissertation research project under the supervision of a URI faculty member. This course is for students pursuing a Masters or PhD in Computer Science with a concentration in Digital Forensics.
- COMING SOON CSC 592 Forensic Analysis Tools. This course is offered in the Spring and is taught by Adjunct Prof. Dickerman. This course is an entire semester dedicated to learning how to complete forensic examinations using one of the industry's leading tools, EnCase Forensics. After completing this course students will be eligible to take the highly regarded EnCe certification test through Guidance Software. This course will be taught online. It's pre-requisite is CSC485 or CSC585.
